Happy Monday to all!  I apologize for not being able to do the blog this past Friday.  Internet outage in the entire area all day and didn’t get it back until very late Friday night.  Back at it today.

The Marlins lost all three games to the Brewers this weekend, but that is not the worst of it.  They were shutout in all three games, including a 1-0 loss in 13 innings yesterday.  Caleb Gindl ended the game with his first major league homer off reliever Ryan Webb.  The Marlins have not scored a run in their last 37 innings, a new team record.  They are threatening the Major League record for futility.  They have a chance to avoid that record in Denver tonight, as they open up a four-game series at hitter-friendly Coors Field against the Rockies.  Drew Pomeranz will start for the Rockies tonight, while Tom Koehler takes the hill for the Fish.  Game time is at 8:40 pm Miami time.  The expected pitching matchups for the rest of the series with the Rockies:

TUESDAY Jose Fernandez vs Jhoulys Chacin 8:40 pm
WEDNESDAY Jacob Turner vs Jorge de la Rosa 8:40 pm
THURSDAY Nathan Eovaldi vs Juan Nicasio 3:10 pm

The Marlins return home for a Friday night encounter with the Pittsburgh Pirates, the first of ten consecutive games at Marlins Park.

In the Major Leagues yesterday, first in the National League,

Mets 5 Phillies 0
Matt Harvey continues to shine, shutting down the Phillies over seven innings, striking out 10 with no walks.

Pirates 3 Reds 2
Jody Mercer had the tie-breaking run-scoring single in the seventh inning as the Pirates avoided the sweep.

Dodgers 9 Nationals 2

Matt Kemp homered in his first at bat as he returned from the disabled list, igniting a seven-run rally.  The Dodgers swept the series against the Nats.

Cardinals 3 Padres 2
Allen Craig made a leaping catch to rob Jedd Gyorko of a game-winning home run to end the game.

Rockies 4 Cubs 3
Nolan Arenado hit the go-ahead single in the bottom of the sixth inning.

D-Backs 3 Giants 1
Cody Ross decided the game with a two-run single.

Over in the American League,

Rays 4 Jays 3
Chris Archer gave up one run and five hits in his seven innings of work.  The Rays have won six straight, and 17 of their last 19.

Mariners 12 Astros 5
Nick Franklin hit his first career grand slam.  Dustin Ackley, Michael Saunders, and Brad Miller each drove in a pair of runs.  Felix Hernandez lowered his AL-best ERA to 2.43.

Tigers 4 Royals 1
Miguel Cabrera and Andy Dirks both connected long distance, Brayan Peña drove in two runs with a pair of sacrifice flies.

Indians 7 Twins 1
Justin Masterson gave up only one hit in seven innings of work, striking out eight and did not walk a batter.  Jason Kipnis homered and drove in three runs, Michael Brantley also pushed three runs across.

A’s 6 Angels 0
Bartolo Colon continues to amaze, throwing his third shutout of the season.

Orioles 4 Rangers 2
Chris Tillman pitched into the ninth inning to improve his record to 12-3.

White Sox 3 Braves  1
Jose Quintana pitched 5 2/3 innings while working in and out of trouble often.  The Braves have lost 3 out of 4.

Red Sox 8 Yankees 7 (11 innings)
Mike Napoli hit his second home run of the game in the 11th to end the game.  The Yankees lost for the fourth time in their last five games.

A personal observation:  I continue to insist that the two best-run organizations in MLB are the Tampa Bay Rays and the St. Louis Cardinals.

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  The Marlins have not scored a run in 37 consecutive innings, a new team record.  What team holds the Major League record for ineptitude?  Tell you later, alligator.

You need to check out the details of the Marlins’ hitting (or lack thereof) woes:

In what was a bad, bad weekend, let’s include a “highlight” clip of Giancarlo Stanton “assisting” on a home run by the Brewers Jonathan Lucroy.  (Loved the throwback uniforms, by the way):

No surprise here, as the Fish are still at the bottom of the list in runs scored in MLB, with 306 runs in their 96 games.  Here are the rest of the bottom-dwellers:

TEAM            W-L       Runs
Marlins 35-61 306
Nationals 48-50 362
White Sox 39-56 362
Astros 33-64 365
Pirates 57-39 367

The Boston Red Sox, in contrast, lead the majors with 512 runs scored in their 100 games.

Here are the up-to-the-minute standings in MLB:

Here are the individual league leaders in MLB:

Here are the latest trade rumors around the majors, as we approach the July 31st trade deadline:

Here is ESPN chiming in with their gossip:

From Fox Sports and Yardbarker, here is the latest buzz:

Teams need to remember some recent bad (one-sided) deals in the past.  For example:

Detroit sent next to nothing to the Marlins for Miguel Cabrera

Rangers trade Mark Teixeira to Atlanta for Neftali Felix, Elvis Andrus, and Matt Harrison

Red Sox trade Heath Slocumb to Seattle for Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek

Cardinals sent TJ Matthews and two other players to Oakland for Mark McGwire

There have been many, many more, the above deals are just the most recent ones that come to mind.  Let me know if you have another favorite.

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN has his second-half MLB storylines:

For the conspiracy theorists out there, ARod has a Grade 1 quad strain and will not be rejoining the Yankees just yet:

In college football, FIU continues to make unwanted headlines.  David J. Neal of the Herald has more in his FIU blog:

I preface this by saying that I have been friends with FIU Athletic Director Pete Garcia for many, many years and I have been involved with the FIU football program as a broadcaster since its inception.  Although I realize and understand that student-athletes need to take responsibility for their actions, the university, and more specifically, the athletic department, should be held accountable for the behavior and the lack of success both in the classroom and on the field of their student athletes.  Athletic Directors at other universities have been fired for much less.  As the Athletic Director, Pete is responsible for the successes and the failures.  In my opinion, he has made questionable (at best) decisions, such as hiring Isiah Thomas as basketball coach and firing football head coach Mario Cristobal after last season.  According to sources, this situation is going to get bigger before it goes away, with more possible suspensions and dismissals on the horizon.

Someone at FIU needs to pay attention: This athletic program needs to refocus very quickly, stay away from controversy, and start producing positive results, both on and off the field.

In NFL news, the Miami Dolphins opened training camp yesterday, and immediately got the bad news that their first round selection, Dion Jordan, will be out of action indefinitely due to a “non-football” injury.  ESPN’s James Walker has the story:

It is now confirmed.  Dolphins center Mike Pouncey is an idiot:

At least, regardless of the mindless Pouncey twins, we can all sleep at night, knowing full well that Aaron Hernandez remains in jail, where he belongs.

In NBA news, this item from NBC Sports is yet another reason why the Charlotte Bobcats (soon to be Hornets again) will never, ever, win anything.

Remember, the New Orleans franchise just relinquished the Hornets name in favor of the Pelicans.

THE ANSWER TO TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION: The Marlins have not scored a run in 37 consecutive innings, a new team record.  What team holds the Major League record for ineptitude?

Although this streak is the longest in 28 years, when the Astros went 42 innings in 1985 without scoring a run, that is not the major league record.  The Chicago Cubs were held scoreless for 48 consecutive innings in 1968, a season often referred to as “The Year of the Pitcher”.  The Philadelphia Athletics of 1906 (according to some records) also went 48 innings without scoring a run.
