THURSDAY, JULY 11th, 2013

The Marlins beat the Braves yesterday afternoon 6-2 to avoid getting swept and put a stop to a five-game losing streak.  The Fish jumped all over Braves starter Paul Maholm in the first innings, scoring four runs, two on a Giancarlo Stanton double.  Placido Polanco went 3-5 and drove in three runs to back a terrific effort on the mound by Marlins starter Jacob Turner.  Turner allowed just two runs on four hits in seven innings of work.  The Marlins will enjoy a day off today, and will welcome the Washington Nationals to Marlins Park on Friday.  Here are the expected pitching matchups against Washington this weekend:

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  Incredibly enough, there has only been one grand slam hit in All Star game history.  Who hit it? Tell you later, alligator.

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports is reporting that Derek Jeter will be activated by the Yankees in time for today’s game against the Royals.  Welcome back to the captain:

Rosenthal also brings us his views of the whole Biogenesis investigation and the possible suspensions coming our way.  Very interesting reading:

Today’s contestant in the play of the year category Minnesota Twins rookie centerfielder Aaron Hicks:

The Atlanta Braves have the biggest division lead in baseball so far, five games ahead of the Nationals in the NL east, but everything is not going according to plan.  Imagine what they will be like when Dan Uggla, Jayson Heyward, and the Upton brothers come out of their slumps:

Raul Ibañez of the Seattle Mariners shows the world how to play in the major leagues at a high level at the age of 41 the RIGHT way.  Great interview and article from Jim Caple of ESPN.com:

Personal note to Yankees GM Brian Cashman:  What the hell were you thinking?  Why in God’s name didn’t the Yankees keep this guy?

I used to wonder why Jim Bowden wasn’t a GM anymore and went to ESPN.  Now I know.  Here are five blockbuster trades he’s like to see:

David Schoenfeld of ESPN.com has a list of his biggest impact deadline trades in history:

Dodgers rookie Yasiel Puig could be headed for disaster if he signs rap mogul Jay-Z as his agent:

In case you missed it, Jason Whitlock of Fox Sports talks about the fraud named Jay-Z:

Personal note:  JayZ is a total nincompoop, as well as a low-life.  He’s the knuckle-dragging, ignorant, scum-sucking weasel that just recently went to Cuba on vacation with his wife, Beyonce, who is obviously as dumb and stupid as she is beautiful.  If Puig signs with this ass-wipe, it would lead him down the wrong path.

Congrats, David Ortiz.  The Big Papi is now the leader in hits as a DH in MLB history:

Here are the individual league leaders in MLB:

In NBA news, the Birdman and the Miami Heat made it official yesterday:  Chris Andersen will be returning to the Miami Heat next season.  The Heat are facing some serious salary cap issues.  The Herald has the datails:

Here is another reason why LeBron James will NOT ever return to the Cleveland Cavaliers.  ESPN has the story on the seven foot pile of human waste Andrew Bynum signing with the Cavs:

Personal note to the Cavs:  Who thought it was a good idea to pay good money to a guy who didn’t play the entire 2012-13 season, while still find time to party and dance in Spain and other international port of calls during the season, and then tell teams that he was not going to practice in for them this year.  Lots of talent, as evidenced by his 2011-12 season when he averaged 19 points and 12 rebounds, but a total buffoon.  Not really the guy I want on my team, thank you very little.

In NFL news, Aaron Hernandez is still in jail, where he belongs.

More from the NFL.  In case you missed it, if I was a betting man and was in Las Vegas, I would bet on the over for the number of wins for the Dolphins this season (7.5).  Absolutely LOVE the OVER on the Dolphins.  Here is the complete Las Vegas list for predicted number of wins:

Omar Kelly of the Sun-Sentinel has ten lingering questions for this year’s edition of the Miami Dolphins:

Dolphins training camp opens July 21st.  Here’s the full story from the Herald:

THE ANSWER TO TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION: Incredibly enough, there has only been one grand slam hit in All Star game history.  Who hit it?

Fred Lynn connected in the 1983 game, played at Comiskey Park in Chicago.  Atlee Hammaker was the pitcher for the NL and he obviously did not enjoy his 15 minutes of fame, giving up six hits and seven runs in his inning of work.
