THURSDAY BLOG, July 25, 2013

Jacob Turner was a hard-luck loser last night, as the Marlins fell to the Rockies 2-1.  Turner allowed only two runs and six hits in his six innings of work, and it was his third straight start in which he has allowed only two runs.  Bottom line, if your team doesn’t hit, you will not win.  Jorge de la Rosa was just a little better for the Rockies, as he threw six scoreless innings.  The Fish and Rox return to the field for a matinee at 3:10 pm Miami time this afternoon.  Juan Nicasio will start for the Rockies, and the Marlins will counter with Nathan Eovaldi.  After today’s game, the Fish will return home and kickoff a ten-game home stand against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the New York Mets, and the Cleveland Indians.

The Fish are still at the bottom of the list in runs scored in MLB, with 314 runs in their 99 games.  Here are the rest of the bottom-dwellers:

TEAM        W-L       Runs
Marlins 37-62 314
White Sox 39-59 369
Nationals 48-53 370
Astros 34-66 376
Pirates 60-39 382
Royals 47-51 382

The Boston Red Sox, in contrast, lead the majors with 519 runs scored in their 103 games.

In the Major Leagues yesterday, first in the National League,

Pirates 4 Nationals 2
Francisco Liriano didn’t allow a hit until the sixth inning as the Nats lost for the sixth straight game, and have lost 11 of their last 13.

Braves 8 Mets 2
A very costly win for the Braves, who lost Tim Hudson with a broken right ankle.  Hudson took a shutout into the eighth inning and was working on a four-hitter when he got stepped on by Eric Young Jr. while covering the bag.  Evan Gattis, Dan Uggla, and Andrelton Simmons all homered for the Braves. who have the biggest division lead in all of baseball, eight games over the Phillies.

Brewers 3 Padres 1
Kyle Lohse gave up five hits in seven innings, improving to 6-1 over his last 11 starts, with a 2.51 ERA.

Cardinals 11 Phillies 3
Matt Adams had two hits and three RBI, Shane Robinson also drove in three with a bases-loaded triple.

Cubs 7 D-backs 6 (12 innings)

Reds 8 Giants 3
Joey Votto, Brandon Phillips, and Devin Mesoraco each drove in two runs in support of Mike Leake, who improved to 10-4.

Over in the American League,

Rays 5 Red Sox 1
Wil Myers had two hits and two RBI and David Price threw the complete game.  The Rays can move into first place today with a win over the Sox.

Rangers 3 Yankees 1
Matt Garza was great in his Rangers debut, allowing only an unearned run on five hits in 7 1/3 innings.  AJ Pierzynski had the key blow, a tie-breaking homer in the sixth.

Royals 4 Orioles 3
Eric Hosmer hit a game-tying two-run homer in the eighth inning, and Alcides Escobar won the game with a run-scoring double in the ninth.

Tigers 6 White Sox 2

A’s 4 Astros 3
Coco Crisp had a two-run homer in the seventh inning and John Jaso also connected long distance.

Angels 1 Twins 0
Jered Weaver tossed eight scoreless innings and Alberto Pujols drove in the game’s only run

Indians 10 Mariners 1
Scott Kazmir gave up only one hit and an unearned run in eight innings of work.  Michael Bourn hit a grand slam, Asdrubal Cabrera also connected long distance in the win.

It is really getting ugly in New York with the Yankees and Alex Rodriguez.  From YES Network, here is the statement from GM Brian Cashman:

The Yankees and ARod are both looking to get divorced, but there is too much money in the middle:

Mike Lupica of the NY Daily News says Alex Rodriguez should either file a grievance or shut the “F” up:

Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports points out that ARod committed another error:

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports is also chiming in on what ARod is doing:

My take is simple:  I have always supported ARod and touted him as the best player in baseball during the 2000’s.  That being said, he has always been one of those people that surrounds himself and associates with only “Yes People”, people who agree with him and tell him what he wants to hear 100% of the time.  People that choose to question him or disagree with him are discarded like yesterday’s newspaper.  That is the unfortunate truth, one that is very prevalent with today’s spoiled athletes.  ARod needs to face reality and come to terms with the truth.  He should stop trying to put a “spin” on everything, put an end to all the PR peeople and the attorneys, and just tell the truth.  Face the music and pay the consequences.

TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION:  Two part question, requiring some thought.  Part one  today, part two tomorrow.  Here we go:  In the decade of the 2000‘s, Alex Rodriguez led MLB in home runs with 435.  Who were the leaders in the prior decades between?  Today, give me the leaders in the decades of the 1920‘s, 1930‘s, 1940‘s, and the 1950‘s.  Tomorrow, the 1960‘s. 70‘s, 80‘s, and 90‘s.  I promise you, you will be surprised at the correct answers.  The answer to part one comes later, alligator.

In other baseball news, the Braves suffered a huge loss yesterday, as Tim Hudson broke his ankle on a play at first base.  Fox Sports South has the details:

The Braves are going to have to address this latest injury, as Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports adds:

Seattle Mariners manager Eric Wedge suffered a stroke.  ESPN.com has the story:

Alfonso Soriano has OK’d a potential trade to the Yankees.  Now it is up to the teams to come to terms.  ESPN is all over this one, as well:

Here are the up-to-the-minute standings in MLB:

Here are the individual league leaders in MLB:

Here are the latest trade rumors around the majors, as we approach the July 31st trade deadline:

Here is ESPN chiming in with their gossip:

From Fox Sports and Yardbarker, here is the latest buzz:

In Dolphin news, Mike Wallace is happy with what’s going on here with the Fins. Here’s the Miami Herald report:

What’s going on in training camp?  Here it is, according to the Herald:

Armando Salguero has his observations:

We can all continue to sleep at night, knowing full well that Aaron Hernandez remains in jail, where he belongs.

In NBA news, Mike Miller will be joining the Memphis Grizzlies this coming season.  Congrats to Mike.  Let it fly!  Here’s the full story from ESPN:

In today’s fairy tale, also from the NBA, someone asked Bulls point guard Derrick Rose who the best player in the NBA is.  ESPN.com brings us his answer:

The NBA’s combination of the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion from the Wizard of Oz really needs to take a reality pill.

The 1920’s leader was, no surprise, Babe Ruth, who blasted 467 roundtrippers in the decade (no steroids or PED’s for the Bambino, just booze and food).  The 1930’s belonged to Jimmie Foxx, who clubbed 415 dingers.  The 1940’s leader was Ted Williams, with 234 (remember, a lot of the players, including Williams, served in WWII).  The 1950’s were led by Duke Snider, who hit 326 homers.  Tomorrow, we’ll go for the decades of the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s.
