WEDNESDAY BLOG - July 31st, 2013

Sources are reporting that MLB will announce suspensions related to the Biogenesis investigation as early as tomorrow.  Lots to follow up on.

ESPN reports that the Players Association has been notified as to who is getting suspended:

The NY Daily News is all over the story and says there is “overwhelming” evidence against Alex Rodriguez:

Yahoo! Sports is reporting that the players involved in the Biogenesis investigation are ready to accept their suspensions, while A-Roid continues to try and fool himself, his daughters, and the rest of the world:

A-Roid tells Sports Illustrated that he wants to be a “role model”, especially to his daughters.  Here’s the exclusive interview with SL Price:

My take:  At this point, I really cannot believe that A-Roid is stupid enough to try and continue this charade and try and fight the inevitable.  He would do himself, his family, and the game a huge service by accepting the punishment, taking responsibility for his actions, and moving forward.  If MLB and Commissioner Bud Seelig is offering a deal, he should definitely take it and try and salvage whatever career he has left.

John Buck’s two-run single in the top of the 10th inning was the difference, as the Mets beat the Marlins again, 4-2.  Mets starter Zack Wheeler took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, when the Marlins finally got to him and tied the game with RBIs by Donovan Solano and Jake Marisnick.  Nathan Eovaldi deserved better, as he also gave up only two runs in his six innings of work.  Tonight, it will be Henderson Alvarez taking the mound for the Fish, and the Mets will counter with Jenrry Mejia.  Game time tonight at Marlins Park is 7:10 pm.  Get ready for an afternoon matinee tomorrow, starting at 12:40 pm.  Tom Koehler takes on All-Star game starter Matt Harvey.

In other Marlins news, sources tell me that a few teams, especially the Texas Rangers, continue to call the Fish about Giancarlo Stanton.  The team’s position, at this time, is that they are NOT trading the man-child.

In the video of the day, Marlins reliever Chad Qualls looked a little bit foolish after retiring the Mets last night in the eighth inning.  Check it out:

The Fish are still at the bottom of the list in runs scored in MLB, with 335 runs in their 105 games.  Here are the rest of the bottom-dwellers, and, as you can see, we have a traffic jam of teams trying to make the bottom five:

TEAM W-L Runs
Marlins 40-65 335
White Sox 40-64 385
Astros 35-70 394
Nationals 52-55 400
Giants 46-59 402

In contrast, the Red Sox lead the majors with 540 runs scored in their 108 games, and the Detroit Tigers have scored 538 runs in 105 games.

In other baseball news, the White Sox, Red Sox, and Tigers completed a three-team trade.  The White Sox sent pitcher Jake Peavy to Boston for three minor leaguers.  Peavy is 8-4 with a 4.28 ERA in 13 starts this season.  The Tigers sent prized prospect Avisail Garcia and reliever Bryan Villareal to Chicago, and received shortstop Jose Iglesias from the Red Sox.  The Tigers needed to add a shortstop with the suspension of Jhonny Peralta looming.  Iglesias has tailed off a bit, but is hitting .330 this season.

The Oakland A’s strenghtened their infield and traded for Alberto Callaspo, sending minor league prospect Grant Green to the Angels in return.  The Yankees had also been interested in Callaspo.

Here are the latest trade rumors around the majors, as we approach the July 31st trade deadline:

THE ANSWER TO TODAY’S TRIVIA QUESTION: Who is the only person to wear all four uniforms of the New York baseball teams? (the Giants, the Dodgers, the Yankees, and the Mets)

Easy one.  Casey Stengel.  Stengel played for the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1912-1917 (also managed them from 1934-1936), played for the NY Giants from 1921-1923, managed the Yankees from 1949 to 1960, and managed the expansion New York Mets from 1963 to 1965.
