WEDNESDAY'S BLOG - July 24th, 2013


Rookie Christian Yelich had three hits in his first three major league at bats and finished with two RBI.  Giancarlo Stanton blasted a monster home run, and is now 11-31 at Coors Field, a .355 average, with two doubles, seven homers, and 12 RBI.  Jose Fernandez continues to pitch well, going seven innings in which he gave up two runs on five hits, striking out eight.  Fernandez is 3-2 with a 2.14 ERA and 44 strikeouts in his last seven starts, covering 46 1/3 innings.  The Marlins and the Rockies will take the field at 8:40 pm tonight.  Jorge de la Rosa will start for the Rockies, Jacob Turner will toe the rubber for the Fish.  The four game series ends tomorrow with an afternoon contest, starting at 3:10 pm.  The Marlins return home for a Friday night encounter with the Pittsburgh Pirates, the first of ten consecutive games at Marlins Park.

Carlos Torres allowed only a home run to Andrelton Simmons on the second pitch of the game in six innings of work.  Ike Davis drove in the go-ahead run in a three-run sixth inning.

Dodgers 10 Blue Jays 9
Adrian Gonzalez hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning to give the Dodgers their fifth straight win.  Andre Ethier also connected long distance.  Ethier and Mark Ellis drove in three runs apiece.  The Blue Jays have lost six in a row.  

Padres 6 Brewers 2
Nick Hundley went 3-4 with a homer and finished with three RBI.  

Cardinals 4 Phillies 1
Shelby Miller won his tenth game of the season, giving up three hits and a walk in six innings he pitched.  Allen Craig drove in two runs for the Cards.

D-backs 10 Cubs 4
Erik Chavez and AJ Pollock each drove in three runs, Patrick Corbin improved to 12-1 this season.

Pablo Sandoval hit a two-run double to help the Giants gain a split of the doubleheader. In the first game, Devin Mesoraco, Joey Votto, and Zack Cozart all connected long distance.

Jose Iglesias drove in two runs with a key eighth-inning hit.  The Red Sox lead the Rays by 1 1/2 games in the AL East.

Yankees 5 Rangers 4
Eduardo Nuñez tripled home the tying run in the ninth inning and scored the eventual winning run on a Brent Lillibridge single, all against closer Joe Nathan.  Mariano Rivera retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth to nail down his 32nd save of the season.

Mike Moustakas had an RBI double, Bruce Chen scattered 3 hits and a run in his six innings of work.

Tigers 6 White Sox 2
Rick Porcello pitched seven shutout innings and Jhonny Peralta and Hernan Perez drove in two runs apiece.  Miguel Cabrera was held out of a game due to a sore hip.  

Astros 5 A’s 4
Matt Dominguez tied the game in the ninth with a two-run homer and Jonathan Villar scored the game winner on an error.  Grant Balfour blew his first save after 44 consecutive chances, including all 26 this season.

Chris Herrmann’s grand slam in the tenth capped a seven-run explosion in the tenth inning.

The Mariners have won eight games in a row.  Erasmo Ramirez earned his second major league win.
