Better late than never....

The last-place Marlins enjoyed a day of rest and today they open a three game series in New York against the Mets.  The Fish are sharing the cellar of the National League East with the Philadelphia Phillies, who lost last night to the Atlanta Braves 6-1.  This team really needs to go on a winning streak and try to get back to playing like they did during the month of May.  Giancarlo Stanton will be back in the lineup today after a four game rehab assignment in Jupiter.  Hopefully his presence will make a difference.  Jose Reyes has a 24-game hitting streak going, and has been terrific the last month.  Wade LeBlanc takes the mound for the Marlins today, facing Jon Niese.  Niese has been very good this season against the Fish, in two games he has an ERA of 1.38 against them.  On Wednesday, Nathan Eovaldi faces Chris Young, and on Thursday, a battle between Josh Johnson and RA Dickey.  The Marlins return to Miami this weekend to take on Hanley Ramirez and the Los Angeles Dodgers.  

In other baseball action yesterday, Justin Verlander and Jered Weaver showed why they are at the top of the class among the starting pitchers in the American League.  Weaver threw a four-hit shutout against the Oakland A’s to notch his major-league leading 15th win, 4-0.  Verlander struck out 14 in eight innings and the Tigers beat the Yankees 7-2.  Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder connected homeruns.  The White Sox beat Kansas City 4-2, and their lead over Detroit in the AL Central is 1 1/2 games.  The Yankees now lead the Orioles in the East by 5 1/2 games, as the Orioles got by the Seattle Mariners 3-1. Texas lost to Red Sox 9-2, and their lead in the AL west is now 5 games over the Angels and 5 1/2 over the A’s.  In the NL, the Washington Nationals just keep on winning, beating the Astros yesterday 5-4 in 11 innings.  The Nats maintain a three game lead over the Atlanta Braves.  Pittsburgh beat Arizona 4-0 and Cincinnati lost to Milwaukee 6-3.  The Reds are 3 1/2 games ahead of the Pirates in the Central.  Out west, San Francisco and Los Angeles both lost, the Giants stay 1/2 game ahead of the Dodgers.  

Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim turns 21 years old today, and is on a clear path to winning the Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player awards in the American League this season.  In only 87 games this season, Trout has reached base 165 times and has scored 86 runs.  He is hitting .348, with 19 homers, 59 RBI, and 36 stolen bases.  Look out for the Angels, especially with Alberto Pujols beginning to wake up.     

In Dolphins news and notes, the Fins continue to prepare for their first preseason game this Friday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  The team released the first depth chart of the preseason, and it shows David Garrard as the starting quarterback, something that was expected.  The game on Friday starts at 7 pm.  Even though I don’t watch any of the so-called “reality” shows, I must report that the HBO series “Hard Knocks” debuts tonight on HBO, and it features the Dolphins.  After seeing the great results and positive effects that the Showtime series “The Franchise: A season with the Miami Marlns” has had on that team, I can’t wait to see what happens with the Dolphins this season.    

In the 2012 Olympics, the 2012 Dream Team again looked human yesterday, that is, until the second half of the game with Argentina came around.  Leading only by one at the half, 60-59, the Americans scored 42 points in the third quarter to take control of the game and rout the Argentinians 126-97.  LeBron James scored the first seven points of the second half and Kevin Durant scored 17 of his 28 points in that third quarter Michael Phelps repeated his intentions to retire from the sport and is leaving with a bang.  Earlier this morning, the US women’s basketball team crushed Canada 91-48 to advance to the semifinals.  They will face the winner of the game between China and Australia.  Today, we have the semifinals in women’s beach volleyball and a lot of track and field, including the 100 meter hurdles final.  In the medals race, China leads the US 69-64.  The Chinese have 33 gold, 20 silver, and 16 bronze, while the US has 29 gold, 15 silver, and 20 bronze.

Mas vale tarde que nunca....

Los Marlins disfrutaron de un dia de descanso ayer en la gran manzana, y recibieron la buena noticia de que no estan solos en el sotano de la division del este, despues que los Phillies perdieron ayer contra los Bravos para entrar a acompañar a los Peces.   A los Marlins le hace bastante falta arrancar en una buena racha y volver a jugar como estaban jugando durante el mes de mayo.  Giancarlo Stanton regresa hoy al equipo despues de cuatro juegos de rehabilitacion en Jupiter.  Espero que su presencia ayude.  Jose Reyes entra al juego de esta noche  con una racha de 24 juegos consecutivos bateando de hit.  Wade LeBlanc abre en la lomita esta noche para los Marlins, mientras que Jon Niese abrira para los Metropolitanos.  En dos juegos contra los Marlins esta temporada, Niese tiene un promedio de efectividad de 1.38.  Mañana miercoles, Nathan Eovaldi se enfrenta a Chris Young, y el jueves una batalla entra Josh Johnson y RA Dickey.  Los Marlins regresan a Miami este fin de semana para darle la bienvenida a Hanley Ramirez y los Dodgers de Los Angeles.

En noticias de los Miami Dolphins, el equipo sigue en preparacion para el primer juego de la pretemporada este viernes contra los Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  El equipo anuncio que para este primer juego, David Garrard es el quarterback abridor, algo que se esperaba ya de antemano.  El juego el viernes comienza a las siete, en el estadium de los siete nombres.  Aunque yo no miro los programas de television que consideran “programas de realidad”, esta noche la serie de “Hard Knocks” arranca en HBO, y esta temporada estan con los Miami Dolphins.  Despues de ver los grandes resultados y efectos positivos que trajo la serie de Showtime “The Franchise: A season with the Miami Marlins” a los Marlins, esto lleno de anticipacion para ver lo que les trae a los Dolphins esa serie.   

En las olimpiadas, el equipo de ensueño del 2012 volvieron a parecer humanos comunes y corriente, hasta que comenzo la segunda mitad del juego de ayer contra Argentina.  Ganando por solamente un punto, 60-59, al medio tiempo, los Americanos anotaron 42 puntos en el tercer periodo para tomar control del partido y terminaron apabullando a los Argentinos 126-97.  LeBron James anoto los primeros siete puntos de la segunda mitad, y Kevin Durant anoto 17 de sus 28 puntos en ese tercer periodo.  Esta mañana, el equipo de las mujeres Americanas se dieron banquete con Canada 91-48 para avanzar a los semifinales, donde se enfrentaran a las ganadoras del juego entre China y Australia.  Entre los eventos de hoy, tenemos los semifinales en el volleyball de playa de las mujeres y mucho campo y pista, incluyendo las finales de los 100 metros con valla.  En medallas total, China esta arriba de los Estados Unidos 70-66.  Los Chinos tienen 34 medallas de oro, 20 de plata, y 16 de bronce.  Los Americanos tienen 30 de oro, 16 de plata, y 20 de bronce.
