We’ll start off with the Dolphins today, who had a tumultuous weekend.  They lost quarterback David Garrard for a minimum of four weeks after determining that he needed knee surgery.  After a couple of seasons going through back issues, this does not bode welll for Garrard, who had looked good in training camp and was the number one QB on the depth chart, at least for now.  Matt Moore and Ryan Tannehill will now battle it out for the starting job, and the rookie may get the start this week against the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte, NC.  The Fins fell to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Friday, 20-7.  Tannehill completed 14 of 21 passes for 167 yards, including a TD pass to Charles Clay.  Wide receiver Roberto Wallace caught four passes for 71 yards and Julius Pruitt had six catches for 52 yards.  The tight ends also contributed nicely, Charles Clay had 3 catches for 49 yards, Anthony Fasano catching three passes for 29 yards, and rookie Michael Egnew had two receptions for 39 yards.

This week’s NFL season concludes tonight in Oakland, as the Raiders host the Dallas Cowboys.  Game kicks off at 8pm, on ESPN.

In more Dolphin news, the Chad (Ochocinco) Johnson era is oficially over, before it begins.  The wide receiver was released by the Fins after getting arrested over the weekend in a domestic violence incident.  Johnson allegedly headbutted his wife, Evelyn Lozada, who is on some reality show that I don’t watch.  A match obviously not made in heaven.  Good move by the Fins and head coach Joe Philbin, a move that shouldn’t have caught anyone by surprise.  A couple of months ago, the team got rid of another controversial wide receiver in Brandon Marshall, and got two packs of bubble gum for him in a trade.  You don’t need that type of crap around.

The Marlins continue to flounder and are again in sole possession of last place in the Eastern Division.  The Fish lost two out of three this weekend to the Dodgers, capping off a bad weekend by getting shutout 5-0.  Dodgers starter Chris Capuano took a no-hitter into the seventh inning.  Hanley Ramirez had a very nice weekend against his former team, going 6-13 with 5 RBI in the three games.  The Phillies come to town in a battle for the basement in a three-game series.  The pitching matchups are Nathan Eovaldi vs Cole Hamels tonight, Josh Johnson vs Kyle Kendrick on tuesday, and Mark Buehrle vs Roy Halladay in the wednesday matinee.  The team announced that backup catcher Brett Hayes has been sent down to AAA New Orleans, and they are recalling Rob Brantly.  Brantly came over from Detroit in the Anibal Sanchez/Omar Infante trade.  The 23 year old catcher has impressed in NO, where in 14 games he batted .365 with four doubles, two home runs, and 11 RBI.  After these three games against the Phillies, the team leaves on an 11-game road trip with stops in Denver for a four-game set against the Rockies, another four game series in Phoenix vs. the Diamondbacks, and three games in Los Angeles against the Dodgers.

In other baseball news, a terrific debut for Manny Machado with the Baltimore Orioles.  The 20 year old third baseman who played his high school baseball down here in Miami at Brito, hit three homers in his first four games in the majors this weekend.  His stats for the weekend:  6-16, all hits were for extra bases, and 7 RBI.  The Yankees placed  CC Sabathia on the 15-day disabled list with elbow “disconfort”.  The big lefthander says he will be back as soon as he is eligible to come off the DL.  The Yankees took two out of three this weekend against the Toronto Blue Jays, and lead the AL east by 5 games over the Tampa Bay Rays, who have won six games in a row.  The Chicago White Sox lead the central division by two games over the Detroit Tigers, and out west, the Texas Rangers are beginning to run away from the pack and lead the Oakland A’s by 6 1/2 games.  In the National League east, both the Washington Nationals and the Atlanta Braves continue to play good baseball, and both teams took two out of three this weekend, the Nats in Arizona, and the Braves in New York.  Washington still leads Atlanta by 4 1/2 games.  Cincinnati leads the Central by 4 1/2 games over the Pirates, and San Francisco leads the Dodgers by a game in the west.  In the race for the wild cards, Tampa Bay and Baltimore lead in the American league, although the Oakland A’s are only 1/2 game behind, the Tigers 1 game back, and the Angels are only two games out of that race.  In the National League, it is the Braves and the Pirates, with the Dodgers and St. Louis only 2 1/2 games behind the Pirates.

In the 2012 Olympics yesterday, the 2012 version of the Dream Team completed its mission by beating Spain 107-100 and capturing the gold medal.  Russia beat Argentina for the bronze.  The United States win the medals race, taking home a total of 104 medals - 46 gold, 29 silver, and 29 bronze.  The Chinese ended up in second place, with a total of 87 medals, 38 gold, 27 silver, and 22 bronze.  Great closing ceremonies!  Congrats to Great Britain and now the Olympic flag is in the hands of Brazil as they prepare for 2016.

It is now official.  Dwight Howard is a member of the Los Angeles Lakers.  The Orlando Magic traded their disgruntled center in a four-team blockbuster that included 11 other players and 5 future draft picks.  Howard joining Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, and Pao Gasol in Los Angeles is nice, but it would have been more impressive a group three years ago.  The road to the Western Conference Championship will still travel through Oklahoma City.

Behave yourselves, and always remember that tomorrow will bring us a brand new day.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
