Today’s lead is coming from a totally unexpected source.  We are living in Bizarro World.  The first college football rankings (Coaches Poll) came out and, no surprise, the  top two teams are  LSU, Alabama, and Southern California.  Where the bizarro aspect comes in is that Florida International (FIU) received some votes for the top 25 and the University of Miami received ZERO votes.  Are the planets that far out of whack?  Regardless, congrats to FIU and coach Mario Cristobal.  High expectations this season!

I have good news and bad news regarding the Marlins today.  The good news:  Giancarlo Stanton hit a three-run homer and had four FBI yesterday.  The bad news is that he played in Jupiter with the Hammerheads in a rehab situation.  The big Fish lost again to the Braves last night, 6-1, the Braves taking three out of four up at Turner Field, outscoring the Marlins 23-8.  The teams suffered through almost a two-hour rain delay yesterday, after the Braves had roughed up starter Nathan Eovaldi for six runs in the first two innings.  Back to Stanton, who is expected to join the team in New York on Tuesday after a couple of games in Jupiter.  The team is in Washington, DC to open up a four game series against the Nationals, including a doubleheader today.  Brad Hand gets the call up from AAA New Orleans to start the first game against John Lannan and Josh Johnson will take the mound for game 2 versus Gio Gonzalez.  The first game starts at 4:05 pm, the second game after the conclusion of the first game.  On Saturday, Mark Buehrle will toe the rubber for the Fish vs. Jordan Zimmerman, and on Sunday, Ricky Nolasco goes up against Stephen Strassburg.  Saturday’s game is at 7:05, and on Sunday, they will tee it up at 1:35.  Looks like it could be a LOOOOOONG weekend.  

In other baseball action yesterday, the Texas Rangers pounded the Los Angeles Angels 15-8.  Ryan Dempster made his debut with the Rangers, and wasn’t very good, giving up 8 runs on 9 hits and 3 walks over 4 2/3 innings.  In the rest of the games in the American League yesterday, Minnesota  blanked the Red Sox, 5-0; Kansas City beat Cleveland in 11 innings, 7-6, and Oakland took care of Toronto 4-1, behind Bartolo Colon, who threw 8 shutout innings.  In the National League, Colorado over St. Louis 8-2; Washington blanked the Phillies 3-0; the Mets beat up on the San Francisco Giants 9-1; and the Cincinnati Reds continue to roll, beating San Diego 8-4.  In that game, local product Eddy Rodriguez, who played his high school baseball at Coral Gables and went on to catch at the University of Miami, made his major league debut a memorable one by homering in his first major league at bat.  Congrats to young Eddy.  

Over in Dolphins training camp, the quarterback battle is heating up, probably  more than most people expected.  Rookie first-round draft pick Ryan Tannehill is doing everything he can to make this a difficult decision for head coach Joe Philbin.  Philbin said that the competition is “very close” and added, “I think we’re going to have good quarterback play”.  He also said that Tannehill “has thrown the ball well in the couple of days he’s been practicing and deserves opportunities with those (the first team) guys and to work with different receivers and different linemen.  That’s definitely earned.”  By the way, there is plenty of time for all the quarterbacks to get the adequate number of snaps, with the team taking as many as 160 snaps during the practice day.  

In the 2012 Olympics, Michael Phelps continues to add to his resume in what he says will be his last olympics.  Phelps captured his 20th olympic medal yesterday, the 15th gold of his illustrious career, beating Ryan Lochte in the 200-meter individual medley yesterday.  Not a bad race by Lochte, who took home the silver, but a great race by Phelps, who became the first male swimmer to win the same event in three consecutive olympics.  In gymnastics, American Gabby Douglas took the gold in the all-around competition yesterday.  The 2012 version of the Dream Team, set all kinds of records yesterday in a 156-73 victory over Nigeria.  China took back the lead in the medals race over the United States.  China has 41 total medals, 20 gold, 12 silver, and 9 bronze.  The Americans are at 37 total medals, 18 gold, 9 silver, and 10 bronze.  Today’s events include the US Women’s basketball team against the Czech Republic, Michael Phelps in the 100 meter butterfly finals, US Women’s Soccer team against New Zealand, and the Men’s and Women’s tennis semifinals.  

I’ll close out today’s blog with this:  a family in Ohio found an incredible collection of baseball cards in their attic, some of them over 100 years old.  A sampling of this treasure was sold in Baltimore at a Collector Convention in Baltimore.  The 37 cards featuring such players as Ty Cobb, Cy Young, and Honus Wagner fetched $566,132.

Abro hoy con una noticia que me tomo de sorpresa.  Ayer salieron los ranqueos de pretemporada del football universitario (Encuesta de los Coaches).  Los primeros tres equipos son LSU, Alabama, y Southern California.  Lo que me sorprendio es que la universidad de Florida International (FIU) recibio algunos votos para los primeros 25 mientras que la Universidad de Miami NO RECIBIO NINGUN VOTO.  Los planetas de nuestro sistema solar estan totalmente fuera de orden.  Asi y todo, felicidades y mucha suerte a FIU y el coach Mario Cristobal.  Mucho embullo y gran anticipacion para esta temporada!

Les tengo buenas y malas noticias hoy.  La buena noticia primero:  Giancarlo Stanton conecto un jonron con dos en base y remolco un total de cuatro carreras ayer.  La mala noticia fue que esto sucedio en un juego de rehabilitacion en Jupiter con los Hammerheads.   Los Marlins por su parte perdieron de nuevo contra los Bravos, 6-1.  Atlanta gano de 4-3 en esta serie en Turner Field, anotando 23 carreras en los cuatro juegos contra solamente 8 que pudieron anotar los Peces.  Los equipos sobrevivieron una demora de casi dos horas ayer debido a la lluvia, pero fue despues de que los Bravos le entraron a palos al abridor Nathan Eovaldi, que permitio las seis carreras en los primeros dos innings.  Regresando a Stanton, esperan que se una al equipo en Nueva York el martes despues de un par de juegos mas en Jupiter.  Los Peces estan en Washington, DC donde abren una serie de cuatro juegos contra los Nationals, incluyendo un doble juego hoy.  Brad Hand sube de AAA New Orleans para abrir el primer juego contra John Lannan y Josh Johnson tomara la lomita para el segundo juego contra Gio Gonzalez.  El primer juego arranca a las 4:05, el segundo juego despues que se termine el primer encuentro.  El sabado, Mark Buehrle contra Jordan Zimmerman y el domingo a Ricky Nolasco le toca bailar con la mas fea y se enfrenta a Stephen Strassburg.  El partido del sabado arranca a las 7:05, y el domingo es a la 1:35.  Creo que este pudiera ser un fin de semana bien LAAAAAAAAAARRRRRGO.

Pasando al campo de entrenamiento de los Dolphins, la competencia para la posicion de quarterback sigue siendo el tema de conversacion, y probablemente mas de lo que la mayoria de la gente esperaba.  La seleccion del primer round de los Fins, el QB Ryan Tannehill, esta haciendo todo lo posible por hacerle la decision bastante dificil al coach Joe Philbin.  Philbin dijo que la competencia esta “bien cerrada” y que espera que el equipo va a disfrutar de buen juego de sus quarterbacks.  Dijo  tambien que Tannehill “ha tirado la bola muy bien en estos ultimos dias que ha estado practicando y merece la oportunidad de tener tiempo de practica con los abridores y trabajar con los recibidores y la linea ofensiva.  Se lo merece definitivamente”.  No hay que preocuparse por falta de tiempo de practica para todos los quarterbacks ya que el equipo esta corriendo alrededor de 160 jugadas ofensivas todos los dias.

Para cerrar el blog de hoy - una familia en Ohio encontro una increible coleccion de postalitas de pelota en el atico, algunas de mas de 100 años, y todas en perfectas condiciones.  Algunas postalitas de este tesoro fueron vendidas en subasta en una convencion en Baltimore.  Entre las 37 postalitas que se vendieron estaban postales de Ty Cobb, Cy Young, y Honus Wagner y se vendieron en $566,132.
