The Marlins took care of the Mets last night 4-2.  The Fish did all their damage in the fourth inning, when they scored their four runs.  Carlos Lee had a run scoring single, Giancarlo Stanton drove in the second run with a sacrifice fly, and catcher John Buck drove in the other two runs with a double.  Wade LeBlanc, operating on a strict pitch count since moving from the bullpen to the starting rotation, was able to go 4 1/3 innings, giving up only a home run to David Murphy.  Carlos Zambrano got the win with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.  Steve Chisek closed it out with a perfect ninth inning and registered his seventh save.  Nathan Eovaldi will take the mound for the Marlins tonight at 7:10, the Mets will counter with Chris Young.  Tomorrow, a battle of aces as Josh Johnson and RA Dickey square off at 12:10 in the afternoon.  The Marlins return to Miami this weekend to take on Hanley Ramirez and the Los Angeles Dodgers in a three game series at Marlins Park.  Jose Reyes extended his hitting streak to 25 straight yesterday.  The longest hitting streak in Marlins history belongs to Luis Castillo, who hit in 35 straight games back in 2002.

In other baseball action yesterday, the Yankees lost again to the Tigers, 6-5, their 8th straight one-run loss.  Miguel Cabrera keeps pounding the Yankees, with a home run and a double, driving in a total of three runs.  The Baltimore Orioles and the Tampa Bay Rays both won, so the Yankee lead in the east is down to 4 1/2 games over Baltimore and 6 games ahead of the Rays.  Detroit moved to within 1/2 game of the White Sox in the Central after the Sox lost to Kansas City 5-2.  Out west, the Rangers won, beating the Red Sox 6-2, while Oakland beat the Angels 10-4.  Texas leads the A’s by 5 1/2 games, the Angels by 6.  In the National League, the Washington Nationals are on fire.  They beat the Houston Astros 3-2 in 12 innings, while the Atlanta Braves fell to Cole Hamels and the Philadelphia Phillies 3-0.  The Nats lead the Braves in the east by 4 games.  In the central, both the Pirates and the Reds lost, the Reds are still 3 1/2 games ahead of the Pirates.  In the West, San Francisco beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2, and extended their lead in the division to 1 1/2 games over the Dodgers, who lost to the Colorado Rockies 3-1.  

The NFL season kicks off in earnest tomorrow, with the first week of preseason games.  We know these games don’t mean a thing, but there are lot of interesting stories and bylines to follow in this first week:

In the 2012 Olympics, the men’s basketball quarterfinals are here.  Russia takes on Lithuania, France battles Spain, Brazil takes on Argentina, and the US team has a date with Australia.  The women’s semifinals are set for tomorrow.  France battles Russia, while the US team faces Australia.  In the medals race, China leads the US 73-70.  The Chinese have 34 gold, 21 silver, and 18 bronze, while the US has 30 gold, 19 silver, and 21 bronze.
