The Miami Dolphins had no answers on either side of the ball against the starters for the Carolina Panthers and lost 23-17.  The Panthers exploded to take a 17-0 lead in the first quarter, led by QB Cam Newton who was 11-8 for 119 yards with a touchdown, albeit against a Dolphins defense depleted by injuries.  Cameron Wake, Kevin Burnett, and Karlos Dansby where unable to participate and it definitely showed.  Offensively, the Fins couldn’t get it going with Ryan Tannehill.  In six possessions in the first half, the Dolphins were three and out on four of them.  The rookie led the team on a 15 play, 71 yard drive that culminated in a Daniel Thomas one-yard run.  The offensive line had issues on pass protection, allowing three sacks and four of Tannehill’s passes were batted down at the line of scrimmage.  Won-loss record in the preseason is totally irrelevant, it is a time to develop, prepare, and learn the offensive and defensive system  inside and out.  This is a work in progress, a lot more to do for the Dolphins as they prepare this week for their game Friday night, here at Seven-Names Stadium, against the Atlanta Falcons.  Game time is 7:30 pm.  Reviewing the rest of the games this past weekend,

The Marlins again wasted a number of run-scoring opportunities yesterday, and lost to the Colorado Rockies 3-2.  The Fish continue to occupy the cellar in the NL East after only managing to split the four-game series against the Rockies.  This will probably come as a shock, (wink, wink), but the Marlins were 0-7 with runners in scoring position.  Honorable mention goes to “automatic out” John Buck, who left the bases loaded twice.  He did homer with nobody on base yesterday, so it wasn’t a total loss and raised his batting average to .188.  Josh Johnson took the loss, giving up three runs in seven innings.  The Fish open up a four-game series in Phoenix tonight against the Arizona Diamondbacks.  Mark Buehrle takes the mound for the Marlins tonight against Joe Saunders.  The rest of the series we’ll see Ricky Nolasco vs. Trevor Cahill on Tuesday, and in a rare doubleheader on Wednesday, Wade LeBlanc and Nathan Eovaldi will be the starters for the Marlins.  Reviewing the National League, the Washington Nationals took two out three from the Mets and the Braves lost two out of three against the Dodgers.  The Nats lead the East by 5 games.  In the Central, the Reds are still ahead of the Pirates by 6 1/2 games, and in the west, the Dodgers lead the Giants by 1/2 game.  Jumping to the American League, the Yankees beat the Red Sox two out of three and their lead in the East is now 5 games over the Tampa Bay Rays, who swept the Angels this weekend.  The Chicago White Sox  are still in the lead in the Central, with a 1 1/2 game cushion over the Detroit Tigers.  Out in the West, the Texas Rangers lead Oakland by 5 games.  In the positioning for the wild card, Tampa Bay and Baltimore are ahead in the AL, with Oakland 1/2 game behind the Orioles, and Detroit just two games back.  In the NL, Atlanta and Pittsburgh are in the lead, with San Francisco one game behind the Pirates, and the Cardinals two games back.
