The Miami Dolphins officially named rookie first-round draft choice Ryan Tannehill as their starting quarterback for the season.  Fins head coach Joe Philbin feels that Tannehill gives the team the best option at the QB position, and the fact that offensive coordinator Mike Sherman and QB coach Zac Taylor came to the Dolphins this year after coaching Tannehill at Texas A&M.  Barring an injury or some unforeseen event, Tannehill will do something that the two Dolphin quarterbacks in the hall of fame, Bob Griese and Dan Marino, did not do, as neither one of these two legends started the first game in their pro career.  TRIVIA QUESTION:  Who was the other quarterback taken by the Dolphins in the first round?  (Tell you later, Alligator)  By making the announcement and decision at this time, Coach Philbin will now be able to give Tannehill between 80% and 90% of the snaps in what’s left of training camp.  It also gets on this week’s edition of “Hard Knocks” on HBO.  The Dolphins face the Atlanta Falcons on Friday night at 7:30 pm, here at Seven-Names Stadium.  We’ve seen great quarterbacks join bad teams, immediately start, and go on to fame and fortune (Troy Aikman, Peyton Manning), and we’ve seen guys who didn’t start immediately, (John Elway, Aaron Rodgers, Marino) make it as well.  We’ve also seen the David Carrs of the QB world never amount to anything.  Is there a right or wrong answer?  I will tell you this:  You do not draft a QB with the eighth selection in the draft and be worried about his “psyche”.  Make sure your O-line protects him adequately, give him some good weapons, and let him go out there and play football and have fun.  Does anyone out there really believe the Dolphins were a legitimate playoff team coming into this season, with or without Tannehill as the starter?  Let’s get real.  

By the way, Tannehill, who wears number 17 on his jersey, will become the 17th starting quarterback for the Dolphins since Dan Marino retired after the 1999 season, in what was Marino’s 17th season with the Dolphins.  In keeping with the Numb3ers theme, Marino, who wore #13, retired 13 years ago.

In last night’s monday night extravaganza, the Philadelphia Eagles beat the New England Patriots 27-17.  Philadelphia starting QB Michael Vick suffered a rib injury six plays into the game.  X-rays were negative, and head coach Andy Reid expects him to be ready for the season opener September 9th against the Cleveland Browns.

The Marlins had their best offensive game of the year, pounding out 20 hits, as they pummeled the Arizona Diamondbacks 12-3.  Giancarlo Stanton led the way with two more tape-measure dingers, his 25th and 26th of the season.  Justin Ruggiano also went yard and Jose Reyes and John Buck had four hits each.  Buck’s effort raised his batting average to .198, the highest it has been since May.  Ricky Nolasco takes the mound tonight for the Fish against Trevor Cahill, another 9:40 pm start (Miami time).  A rare doubleheader tomorrow, with game times at 3:40 and 9:40. The Marlins will call up right-hander Jacob Turner, who came to the Marlins from Detroit in the Anibal Sanchez/Omar Infante trade to start one of the games, Wade LeBlanc will probably start the other one.  In four starts in New Orleans, Turner is 2-0 with a 1.98 ERA.  In other games yesterday, first in the National League,

The Boston Red Sox keep making news, albeit for the wrong reasons.  Yesterday, the team fired pitching coach Bob McClure.  McClure, who was hired before the Sox hired Bobby Valentine, fell into disfavor with Bobby V. when he had to take a personal leave of two weeks to attend to a pressing medical emergency involving one of his toddlers.  The always classless Valentine, in an interview back on August 1st, was asked a question about visits to the mound, and he said, “When Bob McClure was on his two-week vacation. [pause] I’m sorry, not vacation, his two weeks away from the team. . . .”  Valentine continues to demonstrate that he has absolutely no people skills whatsoever, and has no business managing a major league team.  The Red Sox also made it official that outfielder Carl Crawford would have season-ending Tommy John surgery in his elbow.  Crawford, who also missed the first 89 games this year, has been playing with pain since his return.  After signing a 7-year, $142 million contract, he has been a total bust with the Sox.  His status for next season is questionable, at best.

Let’s continue with negative news.  Melky Cabrera, who was suspended for 50 games by MLB for testing positive for and banned substance.  The genius then attempted to avoid the suspension by creating a fake website selling a fictitious product to try and fool everyone into believing that he inadvertently took the substance.  Mark my words:  It is just a matter of time before MLB starts revoking working visas from foreign players who are suspended.  MLB went the extra step in tracking down this attempted scheme  and traced the website to Juan Nuñez, who works with Cabrera’s agents.  Nuñez bought three existing websites for $10K to cover up his client’s harebrained plans.  

Speaking of foolish plans, please mark your calendars for this saturday night, but make sure you are sitting down when you read this.  Roger Clemens will take the mound for the Sugar Land Skeeters of the Independent Atlantic League.  Could the 50-year-old righthander be planning to try and mount a comeback to the major leagues?  Only his hairdresser or PED supplier know for sure.

En un dato curioso, Tannehill, que viste el numero 17 en su uniforme, se convierte en 17mo quarterback abridor desde que Marino se retiro al concluir la temporada del 1999, la 17ma temporada de Marino con los Dolphins.  Siguiendo con los “Num3ritos”, Marino vestia el #13 en su camiseta, y se retiro hace 13 años.

Las Medias Rotas de Boston siguen haciendo noticia, pero son malas noticias.  Ayer, el equipo despidio al coach de pitcheo, Bob McClure.  McClure, que fue empleado por el equipo antes de que le dieran el puesto de manager a Bobby Valentine, cayo en desgracia con Valentine cuando tuvo que separse del equipo por dos semanas para atender una emergencia medica de uno de sus hijos pequeños.  El siempre desagradable Valentine, en una entrevista el pasado dia primero de agosto, le preguntaron sobre visitas a la lomita durante los juegos, y el repondio, “Cuando Bob McClure estaba en sus vacaciones de dos semana. [pausa] Perdon, no vacaciones, sus dos semanas lejos del equipo. . . .”  Valentine sigue demonstrando que no tiene la menor idea en como funcionar con los humanos y que no tiene ninguna razon para ser manager de un equipo de las grandes ligas.  Las Medias Rotas tambien dijeron que el jardinero Carl Crawford va a someterse a cirugia Tommy John en el codo, que terminara su participacion esta temporada.  Crawford, que tambien fallo los primeros 89 juegos de esta temporada, ha estado jugando con dolor en el codo desde que regreso.  Despues de firmar un contrato de 7 años y $142 millones, les puedo decir sin que me quede nada por dentro que Crawford ha sido un fracaso total.  Su estatus para el año que viene esta en veremos.

Continuamos con noticias negativas.  Melky Cabrera, que fue suspendido por 50 juegos por una prueba positiva por una sustancia prohibida trato de engañar al beisbol y evitar la suspension al crear un sitio de internet vendiendo un producto ficticio y decir que el uso ese producto sin saber.  Creanme cuando les digo que en cualquier momento, el beisbol de grandes ligas le va a arrebatar las visas de trabajo a estos jugadores extranjeros que violan la polica de drogas del beisbol.  Las grandes ligas fueron un paso mas alla en esta investigacion para llegar a la verdad, y lograron atar el sitio de internet a Juan Nuñez, que trabaja con los agentes de Cabrera.  Nuñez compro tres sitios de internet por $10k para tratar de cubrir los hechos.  El nido de los Ñames sigue creciendo.  

Y hablando de ideas tontas, por favor marquen sus agendas y calendarios para este proximo sabado, pero, les pido que esten sentados antes de leer esto.  Roger Clemens va a tomar la lomita con los Sugar Land Skeeters de la liga Independiente del Atlantico.  Pudiera el lanzador de 50 años de edad estar planeando un regreso a las grandes ligas?  Solamente su peluquero y distribuidor de sustancias prohibidas tienen la respuesta.
