The Marlins got shut out again last night, 4-0.  Cole Hamels did the honors last night for the Phillies and the Fish haven’t scored a run in 18 consecutive innings.  They continue to struggle to score runs, and in this home stand, they have managed to not score in 31 of the last 35 innings.  That is awful.  Hamels was brilliant yesterday in throwing his second consecutive shutout after blanking the Braves in his last start.  He threw 113 pitches last night, 85 of them were strikes.  If only the Marlins starters could figure it out.  Nathan Eovaldi, the Marlins starter, threw 103 pitches in only five innings, 67 of them were strikes.  I don’t care how good your stuff is, you will not win if you don’t throw strikes consistently.  The series with the Phillies continues tonight at 7:10 pm.  Josh Johnson will toe the rubber for the Marlins, Kyle Kendrick will start for Philadelphia. Tomorrow’s game starts at 12:40 pm.  Mark Buehrle and Roy Halladay will match up.    The Fish will then leave on an 11-game road trip with stops in Denver for a four-game set against the Rockies, another four game series in Phoenix vs. the Diamondbacks, and three games in Los Angeles against the Dodgers.  In other games yesterday, first in the national league,

LA Dodgers 5 Pittsburgh 4 Shane Victorino homered and drove in 3 runs
Washington 14 San Francisco 2 Danny Espinosa and Kurt Suzuki drove in 3 runs each
San Diego 4 Atlanta 1                  Chase Headley homered and had 2 RBI
Colorado 9 Milwaukee 6 DJ LeMahieu had four hits and drove in a couple of runs

In the american league,

NY Yankees 8 Texas 2 Nick Swisher with a grand slam, Eric Chavez also went yard
Toronto 3 White Sox 2 (11) David Cooper ended the game with a run scoring single
Minnesota 9 Detroit 3 Darin Mastroianni and Ryan Doumit hit three-run homers
Cleveland 6 LA Angels 2 Brent Lillibridge connected long distance
Tampa Bay 4 Seattle 1 The Rays have won seven in a row.  BJ Upton went deep

In other baseball news, there is a lot of conversation as to the potential Cy Young candidates.  Most people have the award in the AL going to Justin Verlander, although Jered Weaver may have something to say about that.  It gets very interesting in the national league, where two relievers are dominating this season.  My choice for the award this year is still Craig Kimbrel, the closer for the Atlanta Braves.  My second place vote would go to Aroldis Chapman, the Cuban fireballer closing games for the Cincinnati Reds.  In looking at their numbers, you will be able to see just how dominant these two guys are:

Kimbrel 43 games      43 innings     17 hits 6 earned runs 2 HRs      11 walks 75 strikeouts
31 saves         2 blown saves               1.26 ERA WHIP 0.65 (Walks and Hits per nine innings)

Chapman 53 games     57 innings       25 hits 8 earned runs 3 HRs      14 walks      104 strikeouts
                 28 saves      4 blown saves                  1.26 ERA WHIP 0.68

You can’t go wrong with either one of these guys, who are head and shoulders above the other contenders in the national league.  They are the biggest reason that the Reds and the Braves have the second and third best records in the national league, respectively.

Matt Moore and Ryan Tannehill will be front and center this week during training camp as Joe Philbin and the offensive coaches try and figure out who will be the starter when the Fins open their regular season in Houston against the Texans, the only team in the NFL that the Dolphins have never beaten in their existence.  It is also going to be crucial for the wide receivers to step up their game.  Roberto Wallace, Legedu Naanee, Julius Pruitt and Davone Bess have had moments, but they all need to be consistent.  Brian Hartline and Clyde Gates need to get back on the playing field.  The tight ends are a big part of offensive coordinator Mike Sherman’s scheme, and they all contributed in the first preseason game.  Charles Clay, Anthony Fasano, and rookie Michael Egnew are going to get a lot of action this season.  The Fins will be in Charlotte, NC this friday to take on the Carolina Panthers.  Game time is 8pm.

It seems that every year we have a labor issue of some kind in sports, and 2012 is no exception as the NFL and the NFL Referees Association knock heads on a new deal.  The differences are basically money differences, but there are other issues.  The NFL wants ao make a group of these refs work full time.  More than 90% of the officials have full-time jobs in other fields, and they are reluctant to leave their regular gigs.  The league also wants to add three additional crews to give the existing crews more rest and more options to rotate officials if necessary.  Sources familiar with the negotiations, which are stalled at this time, estimated that the differences would not be resolved until the third week of the regular season.  Makes me wonder how they come up with that time frame.  The NFL feels that the replacement officials will be sufficiently trained and well suited to start the regular season.  Note to the NFL:  the pace of preseason games is not the same as regular season games.  With the added responsibility of monitoring head injuries this season, it isn’t as simple as starting one or two rookies on a team loaded with veterans.

Behave yourselves, and always remember that tomorrow will bring us a brand new day.

Cleveland 6 LA Angels 2 Brent Lillibridge conecto larga distancia

75 ponches       31 juegos salvados          2 oportunidades desperdiciadas          1.26 ERA
WHIP 0.65 (bases por bolas y hits por inning)

Chapman 53 juegos       57 innings      25 hits 8 carreras limpias         3 HRs           14 bases por bolas
104 ponches    28 juegos salvados           4 oportunidades desperdiciadas         1.26 ERA
                WHIP 0.68

Roberto Wallace, Legedu Naanee, Julius Pruitt y Davone Bess have had moments, but they all need to be consistent.
